Staff from the former Scranton school held a get-together June 25, sharing hugs, catching up, touring what’s left of the building, taking pictures and reminiscing.
The 1919 three-story classroom structure is no longer there. It was razed 10 years ago, after being closed as an attendance center at the end of the 2007-08 school year. According to local history, a school had been at that location since 1875.
Most of the Scranton school staff continued their employment with the Jefferson-Scranton Community Schools, working in Jefferson when the Scranton school was closed.
The city of Scranton purchased the rest of the building, including the gymnasium, in 2008 for $1. It now serves very well as a community center and city offices.
